Cartoon Sam in Serious Sam: Shatterverse

Short legs, fast dashes, oversized blasts — the bomber who refuses to walk like the others.

Playstyle

Cartoon Sam is the Shatterverse Sam who looks like he walked out of Random Encounter and, to a lesser extent, Serious Sam II: top-heavy, short-legged, and unwilling to share the realistic proportions of the rest of the ship. Analog Stick wished he were cel-shaded. He is not. The proportions still change the run. Behaviour’s playtest notes said it in plain language: Cartoon Sam may move a little slower than the rest of the squad due to his little legs, but his dash recharges faster to get him out of trouble, and his explosions are bigger by default.

That is the whole argument for unlocking him. You do not pick Cartoon Sam to win a walking contest. You pick him because the dash is up again when Retro Sam is still waiting on decoys and because grenades, barrels, and boom Intel hit a wider circle than they do on the other four. He is a mobility bomber. Strafe in a bigger arc than you think you need, dash through the gap you created, and let the blast radius mop the fodder you did not have time to aim at.

The slow walk is not a hidden debuff you can talent away with a hat. It is the tax for the recharge and the default explosion size. If you stand still and try to play him like Alien Sam in a doorway, the short legs will get you killed and you will write a bad Steam review about walk speed. Keep moving. The dash is the kit.

Unlock order is usually Retro Sam first, then Cartoon Sam if the squad lacks a player who actually uses dash on cooldown. Catalyst Orbs buy him in the same two-to-four-hour window as the rest of the roster. He is worth the orbs even if you hate the mesh. The modifiers are not a joke skin.

Ultimate and what is actually published

Behaviour named Retro Sam’s decoys, Alien Sam’s Quad Wield, and Orphan Sam’s buzzsaw portal in interviews and playtest notes. Cartoon Sam’s public identity is the modifier package: slower walk, faster dash recharge, bigger explosions by default. This page will not invent a second named ultimate to fill a heading. If a run offers ultimate upgrades, take the ones that extend whatever special is on your bar and then test them in an empty arena before a lieutenant. The honest launch-week read is that Cartoon Sam is defined by listed modifiers, and the right way to learn the rest is to spend Intel and see what actually scales.

Analog Stick’s review is useful here too. Kits feel simple after many runs. Specials sit on the same three upgrade levers. If you came to Cartoon Sam hoping for a hidden cartoon hammer or a toon-force invuln, you will bounce. If you came for a Sam who dashes more often and whose bombs already hit harder before you pick a single disc, you are in the right timeline.

Lean the run into explosions. When an Intel disc, trinket, or shop gun mentions blast radius, fire, or charge-up explosives, Cartoon Sam pays you more than Broken Sam does for the same card. When the shop is all sniper affixes, you can still dash, but you are fighting the kit instead of riding it. The builds guide is the place to park those pairings once you have a few clears.

Modifiers

The published modifiers are enough to change a 45-minute run:

  • Walk speed is lower because the legs are short. Plan paths. Do not assume you can backpedal the same distance Retro Sam can.
  • Dash recharges faster. Spend it. A saved dash on Cartoon Sam is a wasted identity.
  • Explosions are bigger by default. Grenade launcher, barrels, kamikaze chains, and any boom Intel are his guns even when the minigun is unlocked.

Playtest notes framed those three as the example of how every Sam now has unique modifiers. They are not flavor text. In a five-player lobby the difference compounds: a Cartoon Sam looping the edge with fast-recharge dashes plays nothing like a Retro Sam field of decoys. TechTimes used that exact comparison for a reason.

Trinkets can be Sam-specific. If a desk item at the Serious Program hub mentions dash or explosion size, it belongs on Cartoon Sam before it belongs on Orphan Sam. Experiment. Shatterverse will not print a full hidden spreadsheet in the pause menu.

Who should pick Cartoon Sam

Pick Cartoon Sam if you already strafe well and you are tired of waiting on dash. He is the right call for:

  • Players who treat dash as a fire button, not an emergency.
  • Squads that already have Retro Sam peeling and need someone on the rim.
  • Solo players who would rather dodge a lieutenant slam than stand in Quad Wield range.
  • Anyone building explosion Intel on purpose, including grenade launcher fans.

Skip him if your hands do not dash, if you insist on walking down every lane, or if the lobby already has two bombers and nobody holding a door. In that case buy Orphan Sam for a portal that works in packed 4–5 player rooms, or read the Sam tier list before you spend orbs on a third mobility kit.

He is also a bad pick for the one friend who only plays pistols and never looks at the dash prompt. Give that friend Retro Sam or Broken Sam. Cartoon Sam wants a player who likes the recharge.

Co-op role

In 1–5 player sessions with cross-play and peer-to-peer, Cartoon Sam is the flank. You are not the revive magnet and you are not the decoy. Loop the arena, dash off bad ground, and collapse on the cluster when your explosions will actually hit more than one elite. Call when you are dashing through a choke so Orphan Sam does not drop buzzsaws on your landing. If Alien Sam is Quad Wielding the center, stay on the rim; doubling the frontline wastes the walk-speed tax you already paid.

Solo still works. Offline still works. A Cartoon Sam solo run is a movement exam. You will feel the short legs in empty space and feel the dash recharge every time a Harpy pack spawns behind you. Host rules and loot instancing sit on the co-op guide. This page only cares that you are the player who uses space the others will not.

Weaknesses

Slow walk is the headline weakness and it is not a meme. Wide arenas that punish backpedal will humble you if dash is on cooldown. Bigger explosions are a gift until you stand in your own blast or steal execute targets the healer needed. Analog Stick also noted that after many runs the kits feel simple: you will not grow a second movement tool. You get a faster dash and a fatter boom, then you repeat them until the credits.

He is not a hold-the-line Sam. If your squad needs a veteran in a doorway, that is Broken Sam. If it needs four guns in a cluster, that is Alien Sam. Cartoon Sam who tries to tank a lieutenant without dashing is just a short-legged target.

Unlock him anyway. Two to four hours of Catalyst Orbs is cheap for a modifier package that changes how every explosion in the run reads. Then go play a night as Orphan Sam so you remember what a group-control ultimate feels like when you stop moving.

Cartoon Sam is the Serious Program’s reminder that walk speed is a statistic and dash is a personality. Spend the recharge, take the bigger boom, and let the other Sams keep their long legs. When a run starts offering nothing but sniper discs, park him and open the builds guide instead of forcing a bomber to snipe for forty-five minutes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.

Why is Cartoon Sam slower than the others?

Short legs. Playtest notes say he walks slower than the squad, but his dash recharges faster and his explosions are bigger by default.

What is Cartoon Sam's ultimate?

Behaviour has not published a named ultimate for him the way it named Quad Wield or decoys. His kit is the listed modifiers. Experiment with Intel that scales dash and explosions.

Who should unlock Cartoon Sam first?

Anyone whose squad already has Retro Sam for peel and still lacks a dasher. He is a common second unlock after the starter.

Is Cartoon Sam good in solo?

Yes, if you actually dash. Solo and offline work. He is a movement exam, not a doorway tank.

What should I read after this page?

Compare him with Orphan Sam, then check the Sam tier list and the explosion pairings in the builds guide.
