Serious Sam: Shatterverse Shatterverse Controls

Remappable keyboard, mouse, and controller binds, plus the backpedal habits that keep a run alive.

Controls

Serious Sam: Shatterverse is still a circle-strafe shooter. Unreal Engine 5 and five alternate Sams did not replace the old rule: you look at the biggest threat, you walk away from it, and you reload while the next pack is still a silhouette. This page is the bind list and the movement lecture. If you have not played a single Serious run yet, pair it with the getting started guide. If you are about to invite four friends, pair it with the co-op guide.

All binds below are the default-style layout most players meet on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Everything is remappable under Settings. Do that before you fight a lieutenant. Dash, melee execute, and ultimate should never share a key with jump.

If your copy swapped dash onto Ctrl or put execute on V, trust the in-game prompt, not this table. The actions matter more than the letters. You need fire, reload, dash, execute, jump, and ultimate available without taking a thumb off look.

Move, shoot, reload

WASD is strafe, not a walk cycle. Hold D or A while you drag the mouse so the crosshair stays on the dense part of a wave. S is not a panic button; it is how you keep shotgun pellets on a Werebull that is already in your personal space. Forward-only players eat Kamikaze explosions because they walk into the scream instead of past it.

Fire is a mouse click or a trigger hold. The Desert Eagle wants paced shots. The shotgun wants range discipline. The Thompson wants short bursts so you can reload before the next Gnaar line. Unlimited ammo does not mean unlimited magazine. Reload is a decision, not an animation you skip. Minigun and laser, once unlocked, overheat; feather the trigger instead of dumping the whole spool into a single Kleer.

Weapon swap should be number keys or D-pad, not a wheel you fumble mid-dash. Put the gun you execute-cancel with on slot 1 and the crowd gun on slot 2. Alien Sam’s Quad Wield does not save you if you cannot find the Thompson after a sniper peek. Rank and affix details live on the weapons guide.

Dash, double jump, grapple

Dash is i-frames and reposition, not a sprint. Tap it through a projectile fan or across a melee lunge. Cartoon Sam’s dash recharges faster because his walk is slower; that is a kit, not a bug. Holding dash as a travel tool will strand you in a bad pocket when the cooldown is still cooking.

Double jump is for arena lips, secret ledges, and getting above a lava tell. Do not double jump as a reflex when a Highlander slams; horizontal dash usually beats vertical panic.

Grapple / use is how you grab vials, hit vending machines, and yank across gaps the procedural layout left for people who look up. Bind it where your index finger already lives. Missing a vending machine because use shares a key with execute is a first-hour problem you can delete in the menu.

Melee execute and ultimate

Melee execute is the main heal. There is no regen tank. Weaken a fodder enemy, walk into range, and execute. The animation is not a fancy takedown; it is a melee hit that pays health. In co-op, leaving a Gnaar at execute range for a downed teammate is more useful than finishing the kill for XP. Practice this in biome one until it is automatic.

Ultimate is per-Sam and charges over the fight. Retro Sam throws decoys (voiced kit, PS1 look, John J. Dick). Cartoon Sam leans on explosion size. Alien Sam (Enots Mas) dumps Quad Wield pressure. Orphan Sam opens a buzzsaw portal. Broken Sam’s kit is the jaded veteran hold. Do not save the ultimate for a lieutenant phase you might not reach. A wiped squad never gets the cinematic. Kit pages start at the Sam roster.

Strafe and backpedal

Classic Sam is a backpedal game. Behaviour called that out when they talked about rebuilding the feel in Unreal. Keep the horde in a cone in front of you. Circle the arena clockwise or counter-clockwise and pick a direction for the whole squad so you do not collide. Stop moving only to execute or to line a sniper shot.

Do not hug walls. Walls delete your strafe options and make Kamikazes free. Do not run down the center line of a long arena; that is how Arachnoid volleys catch every Sam in the stack. When an anomaly later in a run forbids backpedal, treat it as a tax: you will spend more dashes and you will miss executes. Skip that anomaly until Mental is already comfortable.

Controller players should raise look sensitivity until a 180 is one short stick sweep, then lower deadzone until micro-strafes stop drifting. Toggle aim if you cannot track hoppers with a hold. Keyboard players should cap frames and disable mouse accel in the OS if the reticle feels swimmy.

Co-op binds and host hygiene

On a five-stack, call your dash direction and your execute targets. Two people dashing into the same Kleer swipe is a wipe. The host’s connection is the session; if the host’s NAT is miserable, migrate before a lieutenant, not after the first wipe. Cross-play is day one across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, including Cloud Gaming clients. Peer-to-peer means a console with poor upload will stutter everyone’s reloads. Details and revive flow are on the co-op guide.

If you came here because a lieutenant felt unfair, binds are only half the fix. Patterns and weak points are on the boss guide. If the guns themselves feel like wet noodles, you are still on the starter trio — that is expected, and the Orb path is in Getting Started.

Spend five minutes in the bind menu, then spend the next run refusing to stop moving. That is the whole controls guide. Sensitivity is a preference; standing still is a mistake.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.

What are the most important binds to remap?

Dash, melee execute, and ultimate. They must not share a key with jump. After that, put weapon slots on number keys or D-pad. Then go play a Serious run from the getting started guide.

How do I heal with melee execute?

Weaken a fodder enemy, walk into range, and press execute. Vials and vending machines are backup only. In squads, leave execute targets for downed players — see the co-op guide.

Should I play keyboard or controller?

Either. Keyboard is cleaner for weapon slots and 180s. Controller is fine if look sensitivity is high and dash sits on a face button. The PS5 trailer on this page shows the same arena rules as PC.

Why do people say to backpedal?

Serious Sam arenas punish forward-only movement. Keep the wave in a cone, strafe, and reload while you reverse. Anomalies that block backpedal are optional taxes. Pair this with lieutenant tells on the boss guide.

Do minigun and laser need a different fire rhythm?

Yes. They overheat. Feather the trigger. Reload still exists even with unlimited ammo. Unlock order and affixes are on the weapons guide.
