Serious Sam: Shatterverse Intel Discs, Builds, and Boons

Level cap 10, pick-one-of-three discs, per-Sam synergies, shop upgrades, and the picks you should skip.

Builds and Boons

Shatterverse builds are short. That is not an insult; it is the rule. You level from kills, each level offers three Intel discs, you pick one, and the cap is 10. Death deletes the stack. Permanent progress is Catalyst Orbs, weapon ranks, Sam unlocks, and the trinkets on the hub desk. If you came from a 40-node roguelite expecting a novel every run, the Mixed Steam score already contains your review. If you came from classic Sam expecting no discs at all, this page is the compromise Behaviour shipped on August 31, 2026.

Read this after the getting started guide and the weapons guide. Guns without discs still shoot. Discs without a gun you can strafe with are a spreadsheet.

Intel discs and the level cap

XP comes from kills. The three-disc choice is the only mid-run build moment that matters. Typical offers look like weapon damage, max armor, execute-heal size, reload speed, dash cooldown, fire rate on a kill streak, ultimate cooldown, or extra magazine manners. Stack related discs. A second point in execute heal plus a reload disc will save more runs than one point in four unrelated stats.

The cap of 10 means you cannot have everything. It also means a bad pick at level 3 still sits in the build at level 10. There is no respec mid-run. If the three options are armor, a tiny damage bump, and dash cooldown, take dash. Mobility is healing you did not have to find in a vial. If the options are all damage, take the one that matches the gun in your hands (reload for Thompson, heat help for laser, pellet honesty for shotgun).

Kill-streak discs that speed fire rate or reload while you stay in combat are strong on Alien Sam and honest on Thompson. They are bait on a sniper who keeps breaking the streak to scope Kleer God. Read the disc, picture the lieutenant, then click.

What not to pick

Skip raw healing discs if you already refuse to melee-execute. The disc does not press F for you. Skip max armor when the arena is lava and the problem is standing in it. Skip extra ultimate charge if you already sit on a full bar “for the boss” and then wipe on adds — the boss guide will keep saying this until it sticks.

Skip discs that modify a gun you do not hold. A spread affix on a chest gun plus a disc that only buffs pistols is a trap if you live on the Thompson. Skip “interesting” anomalies that forbid backpedal or explode corpses when your heal plan is executes. Dust for trinkets is not worth a wipe on Serious.

Shop modifiers before a lieutenant can be good. They can also be a gold sink. Buy a heal if two squad members are one execute from death. Buy a gun only if it beats the affix you already ranked. Per-player loot means the shop is not a fight with your friends; it is a fight with your own greed.

Per-Sam synergies

Retro Sam wants time. Decoys (John J. Dick, PS1 mesh) exist so you can reload, execute, and revive. Discs: dash cooldown, execute heal, ultimate cooldown. Damage is fine later. If you take three damage discs and never plant a decoy, you bought the wrong Sam.

Cartoon Sam wants explosion radius and dash uptime. He already walks slower and dashes faster; lean into that. Discs that enlarge explosions or shorten dash stacks with the kit. Reload helps, but dash is the reason he lives. Do not pick walk-speed copes when the dash disc is on the table.

Alien Sam is Enots Mas, four arms, Quad Wield. He wants magazine and reload discs, fire-rate streaks, and anything that keeps four guns from clicking empty in a Highlander window. Heat management matters if you unlocked laser. He is a terrible secret-hunter; put him in the cone and feed him ammo manners.

Orphan Sam wants ultimate cooldown and add-wave tools. The buzzsaw portal is a room controller. Discs that shorten that cooldown or keep her alive while she stands near her own portal are the build. Raw sniper damage is a miss unless you already play her like Broken.

Broken Sam wants lane stability: armor is more defensible on him than on Cartoon, execute heal still matters, and reload keeps the veteran kit from panicking. He is the host’s Sam in a five-stack if you need someone who does not chase hoppers. Full kit pages: Sam roster and Sam tier list.

Trinkets on the hub desk (plants, keychains, staplers, mugs, lunchboxes) are the permanent micro-tune: ultimate duration, base damage, Sam-specific extras. Loadouts exist because a Retro trinket on Alien Sam is a wasted desk. Dust from anomalies feeds this. Spend Dust after you own two Sams, not before.

Shop upgrades that are worth the pause

Between arenas you can top up health, buy a gun, bump a special, or grab a modifier. Take the heal if the next room is a lieutenant and you are not full. Take the special upgrade if you are Orphan or Retro and the cooldown is the kit. Take a modifier before the boss only if you understand the tax. “More rewards, no backpedal” is a Mental toy, not a first Serious clear.

Weapon ranks bought with Orbs in the hub are the quiet build. They make the next run less swingy. Intel disc ranks (some discs have four or five tiers in the hub) are the other quiet build. Players report those ranks costing in the same neighborhood as Sam unlocks. Do not max a disc you never pick. Rank the discs you actually click: execute heal, dash, reload.

Three example packages

Solo Serious, Retro Sam: execute heal, dash cooldown, reload, then damage. Decoy on cooldown. Thompson primary. Goal is a nine-arena clear, not a highlight. This is the getting started build with a name.

Duo or five-stack with Alien + Orphan: Alien takes reload and streak fire rate; Orphan takes ultimate cooldown and survivability. Cartoon or Retro fills dash and decoy. Fire portals and Quad Wield on add waves, not on a 5% health bar. Co-op timing is on the co-op guide.

Mental climb with Cartoon + laser unlocked: dash discs, explosion discs, heat discipline from the weapons guide. Skip corpse-explosion anomalies if you still heal on execute. If Kleer God is the wall, swap the laser for a strafe gun and stop scoping.

Builds in Shatterverse are a ten-pick stack plus a Sam plus a gun. That is enough to make Mental interesting and not enough to hide a bad player. If the discs still feel conservative — ricochet dreams, slam dunks that do not exist — that is a fair launch critique. The discs that exist will still save a run if you stop picking armor because it is the first icon you see.

When the stack is right and the lieutenant still deletes you, the tell is the problem, not the disc. When the stack is random and the shop is full of pistols, you do not have a build. You have a 45-minute shuffle. Make the ten picks boring and related, then go get the Orbs for a Sam that matches them.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.

How do Intel discs work and what is the level cap?

Kills grant XP. Each level offers three discs; pick one. The cap is 10. Death wipes the stack. Permanent ranks and Orbs stay. First-hour context is in the getting started guide.

What discs should I skip?

Raw armor when the problem is lava, healing discs if you never execute, and gun-specific discs for a weapon you do not hold. Lieutenant-specific needs are on the boss guide.

Do the five Sams want different discs?

Yes. Retro wants time (decoy, dash, execute). Cartoon wants dash and explosions. Alien wants reload and magazines. Orphan wants ultimate cooldown. Broken wants lane stability. Kits: Sam roster.

Should I buy shop guns or hub ranks first?

Hub ranks on guns and discs you already use. Shop guns only if they beat your current affix. Unlock order and overheat rules are on the weapons guide.

Does co-op change the build?

You still cap at 10, but you can specialize: one Sam stacks portal cooldown, another stacks Quad Wield reload. Revive and execute sharing are on the co-op guide.
