Serious Sam: Shatterverse Serious, Mental, and Shattered

The unlock ladder, why launch players jumped too soon, and the achievements that actually need a full clear.

Difficulty Guide

Serious Sam: Shatterverse does not let you pick Mental from the main menu on a fresh save. Difficulties unlock in a line: Serious, then Mental, then Shattered. You earn the next tier by completing a run — three biomes, three arenas each, lieutenant on the third, about 45 minutes if you live. Behaviour Interactive shipped that ladder on August 31, 2026 as part of a $19.99 premium 1–5 player co-op roguelite FPS. Devolver Digital published it. Unreal Engine 5 runs it. There is no battle pass and no microtransactions.

This page is the climb. It is also a warning. Launch Steam reviews sat Mixed, about 47% of roughly 301 ratings, and a loud slice of that pile is people who treated Serious as a skippable tutorial, walked into Mental or Shattered with a Desert Eagle and one Sam, and then wrote that the game was untested. Analog Stick already described the structure: finish nine rounds, unlock the next tier, do it again. The PS5 reveal trailer on this page is the power-fantasy cut. Your first Serious clear is slower, poorer, and the correct queue.

Read the getting started guide if you have not finished those nine arenas once. Read the launch review if you are here to decide whether the ladder is worth $19.99. The achievement names that sit on this ladder are collected on the achievements page.

How the unlocks actually work

Serious is the only door at hour one. Queue it. Survive all nine arenas, including three lieutenants, and Mental opens. Survive Mental the same way and Shattered opens. Dying in biome two does not unlock anything except Catalyst Orbs, Codex ticks, and the trinket dust you already grabbed. Intel discs and run boons still wipe on death. The account progression is the clear, not the attempt.

A squad does not get a private shortcut. If two friends have Mental unlocked and you do not, you are the reason the lobby should stay on Serious. Carrying a new save onto Mental with starter guns is how the Mixed threads happened. Co-op rules and host duty live on the co-op guide. Kit holes live on the Sam roster. Buy a second Sam (about 35 Orbs) before you treat Mental as a badge.

Xbox Wire’s launch note said the studio designed Shatterverse so DLC or expansions could exist later without stuffing microtransactions into the base game. That is a production stance, not a patch. As of early September 2026 there is still no numbered post-launch patch, so the ladder you have is the 1.0 ladder: three named difficulties, same biomes, meaner math.

Serious is the teacher

Serious is not Tourist and it is not a joke. It is the difficulty where execute heals still feel like a meal (launch players clocked about 15 health per execute), where Act I biomes stay readable, and where you can learn Kleer swipes without an elite HP bar laughing at the Thompson. Veteran Multiverse Saver is the achievement for a Serious clear. It is 20 Gamerscore and the most important trophy on the list, because everything else in the climb assumes you already have this one.

What to finish on Serious before you touch Mental:

  1. One full nine-arena clear, not a biome-two reset.
  2. Dash, melee execute, and reload on binds that do not share jump. The controls guide is the remap.
  3. At least one extra Sam so the run is not five hours of Retro only.
  4. One gun you will actually swap to. Do not wait for a 150-Orb minigun to “make Mental fair.”
  5. The five lieutenant names in your mouth: Lava Golem, Reptiloid Highlander, Kleer God, Rogue NETRICSA, Inverse Sam. Patterns are on the boss guide.

If you bounce on Serious, the problem is executes, shops, or a missed dash — not the unlock wall. Stay here. Codex Orbs are the trickle that buys the roster. Skipping Serious because the name sounds mid is how you donate a refund window.

Mental is the real toy box

Mental is density, elite chance, and a smaller snack. Executes drop to about 10 health. Weapon drops get stingier. Elites — same enemies, inflated HP — show up more. Anomalies from Act II (third-person, no backpedal, vision fog, exploding corpses) matter more because you actually want the Dust. This is the difficulty launch players defend when they like Shatterverse. Modifiers start to mean something. A stacked Intel disc package on Cartoon Sam feels different from Quad Wield on Alien. That is the builds and boons conversation, not a new campaign.

Professional Sam is the achievement for a Mental clear. It is one of the heavier trophies (100 Gamerscore on Xbox). It is not a hidden fight. It is the same nine arenas with meaner math. If Kleer God still wipes you on Serious, Mental will not teach the tell harder; it will just make the add wave thicker while you fail the same dash.

Jumping to Mental the night you unlocked it is the launch complaint. You can queue it. You should not, unless the roster and at least one non-starter gun exist. Steam’s Mixed score is partly this impatience plus gated classics plus the same biomes again. The biomes do grow as you push acts — Act I is a smaller set, later acts add castles, snow, volcanoes — but Mental is not a new planet. It is a louder shuffle. Geography is on the biomes and anomalies guide.

Shattered, and why jumping early feels cheap

Shattered is the end of the shipped ladder. Enemies get spongy. Packs get loud. Execute heals shrink again, to about 5. Launch video reviews called the jump absurd next to Serious and Mental, especially if you are still holding a shotgun and a Desert Eagle because the Orb gates on sniper and minigun have not paid out. That complaint is fair. The game does not hand you a sixth unique boss for Shattered. It hands you HP, spawn density, and the same lieutenants.

Do not queue Shattered to “see content.” You have seen the content. Queue it when Mental is already a clear you can repeat, when you know which anomaly to skip, and when the squad is not half-new. There is no Shattered-clear achievement in the 20-trophy list. Veteran Multiverse Saver and Professional Sam stop at Serious and Mental. Now Do It Again is Defeat Shard of Mental — a lieutenant-scale hunt, not a difficulty name. If you are trophy hunting, Shattered is optional spice, not a box.

Elites are the Shattered joke. They do not gain new attacks. They take longer. If your heal plan is still punching one Werebull, you will starve. Leave Gnaars alive. The enemies guide is the body list; this page is the rule that the snack shrinks while the bar grows.

Achievements that actually need a clear

Two trophies are the ladder: Veteran Multiverse Saver (Serious clear) and Professional Sam (Mental clear). Five more are lieutenant kills you will earn on the way if you stop resetting: Not Too Hot To Handle, Are You Not Entertained?, Back To Hell, Aluminum Recycling, Facing Your Demons. Now Do It Again is Shard of Mental, the one that sits past the regular lieutenant rotation. Kill grinds (500 Gnaars, 10,000 kills, 50 executes, 100 dual-wield kills) do not care which difficulty you picked, but they go faster when you live through biome three.

The wrong trophy route is dying 100 times on Shattered on purpose for No One Truly Ever Dies In The Multiverse while you still lack a Serious clear. Die later. Clear first. The achievements page has the how-tos; this page only tells you not to use the ladder as a suicide booth.

Serious is the class. Mental is the toy box. Shattered is a HP multiplier with a dramatic name. Unlock them in order, spend Orbs on Sams and a gun you will hold, and treat an early Mental queue as the reason the Steam page looks Mixed — not as proof that Behaviour never playtested a Kleer. If the same nine arenas still bore you after a Mental clear, that is a product argument for the launch review, not a reason to skip the teacher difficulty that makes the rest of the wiki usable.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.

What order do Shatterverse difficulties unlock?

Serious, then Mental, then Shattered. A full nine-arena clear opens the next tier. First-hour routing is in the getting started guide.

Should I start on Mental?

No. Unlock it, then stay on Serious until you have a second Sam, a gun you swap to, and the five lieutenant tells. Jumping early is a launch complaint covered in the launch review.

Which achievements need a difficulty clear?

Veteran Multiverse Saver is a Serious clear. Professional Sam is a Mental clear. There is no Shattered-clear trophy. Full how-tos are on the achievements page.

Does Shattered add new biomes or bosses?

No. It is denser, spongier versions of the same nine-arena loop. Act I still has fewer biomes; later acts add tiles. Geography is on the biomes and anomalies guide.

Why do executes feel weaker on higher difficulties?

The snack shrinks: about 15 health on Serious, 10 on Mental, 5 on Shattered. Big enemies do not pay more. Leave Gnaars alive — see the enemies guide.

Is a numbered patch coming to retune Shattered?

None had shipped as of early September 2026. Watch the launch notes and the updates hub instead of assuming a silent retune.
