Serious Sam: Shatterverse Getting Started in Shatterverse

One Serious clear, smart Orb spends, and the 45-minute run before you touch Mental.

Getting Started

Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a 1–5 player co-op roguelite FPS that launched August 31, 2026. You bought a $19.99 premium game with no battle pass and no microtransactions. The first hour is not a tutorial island. It is one Serious-difficulty run, a trip through the hub shop, and a decision about which Catalyst Orbs you will not waste.

Behaviour Interactive built the loop on Unreal Engine 5 with Croteam’s blessing on the license. Devolver Digital publishes. Platforms are Steam (app 2067210), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Solo and offline work. Co-op is optional. If movement still feels wrong after the opening arenas, jump to the controls guide before you refund on a missed dash.

The 45-minute run

A full attempt is about 45 minutes. You play three biomes. Each biome has three arenas. The third arena is always a lieutenant fight. Survive all nine arenas and you have a clear. Die and you drop back to the hub with Catalyst Orbs, Codex entries, and nothing else. Intel discs and run boons vanish. That is the roguelite half of the pitch, and it is not optional flavor.

You always start a fresh run with the same three guns: Desert Eagle, shotgun, and M1A2 Thompson. Ammo is unlimited, but every weapon still reloads, and the minigun and laser (once unlocked) overheat if you hold the trigger like a hose. Healing is not a regen bar. You melee-execute wounded enemies, grab vials, and hit vending machines between packs. Dash, double jump, and grapple are the mobility kit. If you stand still and trade, Serious will still punish you, and Mental will delete you.

Kills grant XP. Each level-up offers three Intel discs. Pick one. The level cap is 10, so you get a short stack, not a 30-node tree. Stack related discs (reload, execute heal, dash cooldown) instead of spreading into three unrelated stats. The builds and boons guide is the later reading; for hour one, take mobility or execute healing whenever the other two options are raw armor.

Hub, shop, and Catalyst Orbs

Between runs you live in the Serious Program hub. This is where Sam Prime’s ship, the shop, the Codex, and the desk of trinkets live. Catalyst Orbs are the only permanent currency that matters. You find them in arenas, they drop from enemies, and you earn a chunk whenever the Codex logs a new enemy, biome variant, or lieutenant. Launch-week players report roughly 50–60 Orbs from a decent run if you actually look around instead of sprinting past every side room.

Spend Orbs on three things, in this order:

  1. Extra Sams (about 35 Orbs each). You begin as Retro Sam. The other four — Cartoon Sam, Alien Sam, Orphan Sam, and Broken Sam — are the fastest way to change how a run feels. Unlocking the full roster in a couple of hours is normal.
  2. Guns that are not the starter trio. Classic toys (sniper, minigun, double-barrel, laser) sit behind Orb gates, and some gates chain: players report the laser asking for sniper then minigun first, with those two costing around 150 Orbs apiece. That gate is a real launch complaint. Do not starve the roster to rush a minigun you cannot overheat-manage yet.
  3. Intel disc ranks and weapon ranks. Permanent rank-ups make the next run less swingy. Leave this for after you own two Sams and one extra gun you actually like.

The shop between arenas also sells temporary guns, health top-offs, and modifiers. Buy a heal if you are one execute from dying. Do not buy a random pistol because it is purple if your Thompson already has a better affix. Per-player loot exists, so a teammate cannot steal your chest.

What to buy first

If you only have Orbs for one purchase after the first two runs, buy a second Sam, not a sniper. Cartoon Sam is the movement lesson (slower walk, faster dash, bigger explosions). Alien Sam is the firepower lesson (four arms, Quad Wield). Orphan Sam is the crowd-control lesson (buzzsaw portal). Broken Sam is the veteran kit if you already know how to hold space. Read the Sam roster once, then buy the kit that covers a hole in your squad or your solo habits.

Second purchase: a gun you will actually swap to. If you already live on the Thompson, a double-barrel or shotgun upgrade is more honest than a sniper you will neglect. Full unlock order and overheat rules sit in the weapons guide.

Third purchase: one Intel rank that matches how you already play (execute heal if you melee a lot, dash cooldown if you do not). Ignore shop bait that adds a tiny damage number to a gun you never hold.

Difficulty ladder

Difficulties unlock in a line: Serious, then Mental, then Shattered. Queue Serious until you have a full nine-arena clear. Mental is not a badge; it is a density and telegraph check. Shattered is for people who already know lieutenant patterns. Launch Steam reviews sitting Mixed (about 47% of ~301) are partly about players jumping difficulties before they own a second Sam or a non-starter gun.

Modifiers and anomalies (third-person, no backpedal, exploding corpses, and worse) show up more as you push later acts. They can pay extra Dust for trinkets. Treat them as optional taxes until you can clear a lieutenant without them.

First-hour checklist

  1. Finish one Serious run or die trying all nine arenas. Do not reset at biome two to “save time.” Codex discoveries are the Orb trickle.
  2. Rebind dash, melee execute, and ultimate so they are not shared with jump. Details are on the controls guide.
  3. Unlock one extra Sam before you unlock a 150-Orb gun.
  4. Practice execute heals on fodder (Gnaars, Beheaded Kamikazes) instead of panic-buying vials.
  5. If you have friends, read the co-op guide before a five-stack. Host quality matters on peer-to-peer.
  6. After your first lieutenant wipe, open the boss guide instead of blaming the shotgun.

You do not need a perfect affix roll to beat Serious. You need backpedal, executes, and a refusal to spend your first 150 Orbs on a laser you have not unlocked the prerequisites for. Once that first clear exists, the rest of the wiki — builds, weapon tier list, launch notes — starts to mean something.

For a buyer’s-eye view of whether the loop is worth repeating at $19.99, the launch review is the next honest page after this one.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.

What should I buy first with Catalyst Orbs?

Buy a second Sam (about 35 Orbs) before a gated classic gun. Then buy one weapon you will actually swap to. Full shop logic is in this page; gun gates are spelled out in the weapons guide and kit differences sit on the Sam roster.

How long is a run and what happens when I die?

About 45 minutes: three biomes times three arenas, boss on the third. Death deletes Intel discs and run boons. Catalyst Orbs and Codex unlocks stay. The builds and boons guide explains what you lose.

Which difficulty should I start on?

Serious, until you have a full clear. Mental and Shattered unlock after that. Jumping early is a common reason people bounce — see the launch review and the boss guide before you queue Mental.

How do I heal if there is no regen?

Melee-execute wounded enemies first. Use vials and vending machines as backup. Dash, double jump, and grapple keep you in execute range. If the execute bind is awkward, remap it using the controls guide.

Can I play this first hour solo?

Yes. Solo and offline are supported. Co-op is 1–5 players with day-one cross-play if you want it. Lobby and revive rules are on the co-op guide.

Is there a battle pass I need to worry about?

No. Shatterverse is a premium $19.99 purchase with no microtransactions. Permanent progress is Orbs, Sams, guns, and ranks — see the weapons guide and builds and boons.
