Broken Sam in Serious Sam: Shatterverse
Boomer Sam: too old for this, still in the doorway, still not a reskin.
Playstyle
Broken Sam is the older, jaded timeline. Players also call him Boomer Sam. The one-liner is I’m too old for this, and the kit matches the joke: he is the hold-the-line veteran, not the dasher, not the four-arm DPS, not the portal. You pick him when a lane needs a Sam who will still be there after the rest of the squad has chased a Harpy around a pillar. He is less flashy than the trailer Sams. That is the point.
Play him like a door. Stand where the spawn funnel is honest, shoot the first body that comes through, and let Cartoon Sam have the rim. You are not racing walk-speed contests and you are not trying to look like Quad Wield on a clip. You are the reason a lieutenant add-wave does not wrap the whole squad. If that sounds boring, unlock Alien Sam and go stand in the pile instead. If that sounds like how you already play Serious Sam, Broken Sam is the modifier package that stops punishing you for it.
He is part of the same five-Sam roster the Serious Program recruited against Uber Mental. Catalyst Orbs buy him in roughly two to four hours, or a few partial runs. Analog Stick had every Sam after about four incomplete attempts. Do not leave him locked because the mesh is less meme-able than Retro Sam’s PS1 look. The veteran kit is the one that makes five-player lobbies less sloppy.
Starter guns are enough to learn the job. Desert Eagle, shotgun, and Thompson cover the first biomes while you figure out which tile you are willing to die on. Spend later orbs on a gun that likes being fired from a planted stance — minigun, laser, double barrel — and read the builds guide before you force a sniper identity onto a doorway Sam.
Ultimate: published facts only
Behaviour named Retro Sam’s decoys, Alien Sam’s Quad Wield, and Orphan Sam’s buzzsaw portal in public notes and reviews. Broken Sam’s ultimate exists, and one upgrade path heals him when he uses it. That heal is self-only. It will not top up Orphan Sam across the arena. It will not replace melee executes for the rest of the squad. If you take that path, you are buying personal sustain on the button, not a group support class.
This page will not invent a rocket barrage, a time-slow, or a cover wall to fill the heading. The kit is defined by the hold-the-line role, the veteran modifiers, and that self-heal rider. The rest is for experimentation in the shop and on Intel discs. When a run offers ultimate upgrades, read the card. If it says it heals you, it means you. If it says something you have not seen on the other four Sams, test it in a normal arena before a lieutenant.
Playtest notes from July 2026 said ultimates were rebalanced to bring them closer in overall power. Broken Sam is not a secret dumpster ultimate and he is not a hidden raid boss. He is in the same band as decoys, Quad Wield, and saws. Spend the button when the lane is actually breaking, not because the icon is up and you are bored.
Analog Stick’s complaint about simple kits applies. You will see the same three upgrade levers many times. One of them may be the self-heal. The others will be the usual duration and cooldown knobs. There is no character creator hiding behind Boomer Sam’s wrinkles.
Modifiers
Unique modifiers per Sam are official. Cartoon Sam’s public example was walk speed, dash recharge, and default explosion size. Broken Sam’s public example is the veteran hold-the-line identity plus the self-heal ultimate path. Expect the run to reward planted play: reload timing, execute heals, and guns that stay accurate when you stop panic-strafing like Cartoon Sam.
Trinkets can be Sam-specific. If a desk item at the Serious Program hub mentions surviving the special, holding a position, or healing on ultimate, it belongs here. If it mentions dash or explosion radius, it belongs on Cartoon Sam. If it mentions decoy fuse, it belongs on Retro Sam. Log what you actually see in the builds guide instead of assuming a hidden tank aura.
He is not Inverse Sam. Inverse Sam is a lieutenant, the evil timeline that already lost to Mental. Broken Sam is playable, tired, and on your ship. Mixing them up in voice chat is how people shoot the wrong target in a story beat.
Who should pick Broken Sam
Pick Broken Sam if you like being the adult in the lobby. He is the right call for:
- Players who already plant in a doorway and want the game to admit that is a job.
- Squads that have a dasher, a Reptiloid, and a portal, and still lose the back lane.
- Solo players who want a self-heal rider on the ultimate instead of a movement exam.
- Anyone who heard Boomer Sam and wanted the jaded kit, not a grey palette on Retro Sam.
Skip him if you only enjoy dash clips, if your five-stack already has two players refusing to rotate, or if you expected a flashy S-tier from the Sam tier list. Launch week ranks him solid but less flashy. That is honest. He will not make a highlight reel that looks like Quad Wield. He will make a run that does not wipe when the rim runner overextends.
He is a poor fit for the player who wants to heal the whole squad. The published heal is self-only. Group sustain is still melee executes, vials, and not vaporizing every wounded fodder before a teammate can punch it.
Co-op role
Co-op is 1–5 players with day-one cross-play and peer-to-peer. Solo works. Broken Sam’s job is the lane nobody else wants. You stay. Cartoon Sam loops. Alien Sam takes the densest cluster. Orphan Sam plants saws on a choke you are not standing in. Retro Sam decoys the collapse. If you chase the same Harpy the dasher is already chasing, the veteran kit is wasted.
Call when you take the self-heal path so the squad does not expect a group top-up. Call when your lane is about to break so someone can decoy or portal it. The co-op guide covers revives and instanced loot; this page cares that the doorway stays staffed.
Five Broken Sams is a meme lock-in, not a composition. One is usually enough. Two can split a map that actually has two funnels. More than that and you are running a retirement home while Uber Mental’s lieutenants walk in the side door.
Weaknesses
Less flashy means less panic mobility. You will not out-dash Cartoon Sam when a slam telegraph appears. You will not out-burst Alien Sam during Quad Wield. You will not blender a packed 4–5 player choke like Orphan Sam. If you pick Broken Sam to win a highlight contest, you picked the wrong timeline.
Unknown ultimate details are a weakness for this wiki page as much as for the player. Until Behaviour publishes the rest of the button, you have to read the upgrade cards in-run. That is better than this page lying about a skill shot that does not exist.
He also needs a player who will actually hold the line. A Broken Sam who plays like Cartoon Sam is just a slower bomber with a self-heal they forgot to buy. Take the veteran modifiers or take another Sam.
Broken Sam is the Serious Program’s admission that one timeline got old and showed up anyway. Hold the lane, spend the ultimate when that lane is on fire, and take the self-heal path only if you understand it will not save your friends. When the squad starts asking who should babysit the back door, send them this page instead of another Quad Wield clip. Then compare him with Orphan Sam and Cartoon Sam on the Sam tier list before you pretend the veteran is secret S-tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Shatterverse questions.
Is Broken Sam the same as Boomer Sam?
Yes. He is the older, jaded Sam. The attitude is I'm too old for this, and the job is hold-the-line, not dash clips.
What is Broken Sam's ultimate?
Behaviour has not published a named toy like Quad Wield or decoys. He has an ultimate, and one upgrade path heals only him when it fires. Experiment with the rest.
Does his heal work on teammates?
No. The published upgrade path heals him, self-only. Group sustain is still melee executes, vials, and not stealing every wounded enemy.
Is Broken Sam weak?
Launch-week lists call him solid but less flashy, usually a B-tier on the Sam tier list. That is an honesty warning, not a ban.
Who should I play with Broken Sam?
Let Cartoon Sam take the rim and Orphan Sam take a choke. Then lock guns in the builds guide.
